Tutorial: Sanding Sealer

Sanding Sealer is designed to be applied to raw wood. It enhances the natural wood tone and accents while also sealing wood fibers, binding the wood grain to minimize grain raise. It can also be used as a pre-stain conditioner.

  1. Environment: Apply in an environment between 68-72ºF.

  2. Preparation: Sand bare wood with 220 grit sandpaper.

  3. Application: Apply one coat of Sanding Sealer and allow to dry. Lightly scuff-sand to remove any raised grain fibers. Apply an additional 1-2 coats to seal wood and provide an excellent surface, ready to topcoat.

  4. Recoat Time: Allow 1-2 hours of drying time between coats.

Working with Stain: Prepare wood and apply 1 coat of Sanding Sealer, then allow to dry. Sand back down to bare wood, leaving Sanding Sealer only in the wood grain and pores. Apply stain and allow it to thoroughly dry. (Note: oil based stains can take up to a week to dry). Apply another 1-2 coats of Sanding Sealer over the dried stain. This will help seal the stain color and keep it from spreading. Now you’re ready for a clear top coat.
