Benefits

  • Flawless Finish – By filling wood grain before top coating, eliminate distracting pockmarks and achieve a silky, glass-smooth finish that enhances the overall aesthetic of your project.
  • Use Less – You no longer have to apply layer after layer of top coat to get a clear, smooth finish. With wood grain filler, as little as one coat is enough to fill any imperfections, letting you apply less top coat at the end.
  • Easy Application – Simply rub in and trowel off the excess to effortlessly fill wood grain pores, leveling the surface for a professional-quality finish in as little as one coat.
  • Total Customization – Apply the filler over stain, sand it, or even tint it with water soluble dyes or just a dab of latex paint colorant, offering you a personalized end result.
  • Safe for You – Our water-based formula is epoxy free, low odor, and super low-VOC. You can breathe easy while using this product in your house and around your family and pets.

Instructions

  1. Environment: For best results, work in an environment between 68-75ºF.
  2. (Optional): Apply your CrystaLac sealer, depending on your desired end result. If using color, add your color before applying Wood Grain Filler to ensure equal color distribution.
  3. Preparation: Begin with a properly sanded surface, free of sanding dust.
  4. Application: Apply Wood Grain Filler with either a lint free rag, a brush, or even your fingers to feel for inconsistencies. Then, trowel off any excess.
  5. Dry Time: Allow to thoroughly dry; about 2-4 hours. We recommend 6-8 hours prior to sanding. Wood Grain Filler will dry milky, but will clear when topcoated.
  6. Recoat Time: Depending on the openness of the grain, your project may take more than one coat.
  7. Finish: Sand smooth and remove any sanding dust with a vacuum or compressed air. Wipe with a damp cloth (water only) and reapply as needed. Do a final sanding before applying your choice of a CrystaLac Top Coat.

Success but some thoughts

Dear Crystalac, by and large a good success where another product previously failed. This was my first attempt at grain filling which means operator error was most likely at play for any shortcomings. But maybe this will be food for thought, and if you have any further advice I certainly would like to hear it.
Tabletop made of white oak with big open grain. First applied a dye stain in a vehicle of water and diluted water base clear varnish as a conditioner. Then applied General Finishes Antique Brown with a rag. Then, your grain filler. On test pieces I realized that sanding irregularities such as dried rivulets or ridges was very difficult without burning through the stain. So I used a wide plastic putty knife to pull as much of the filler off, flush with the surface. 3 applications and the grain was filled. There was a small area where I left a haze of Crystalac but according to your video on YouTube, that would disappear when the clear finish would be applied. I found this to not be the case. The haze remaines visible... Please see area near breadboard end closest to camera... not bad enough for a re-do but in the future I will be certain to sand any visible haze to the point where it is virtually gone. I also wish there was a way to smooth the filler in some kind of final pass while still wet. The plastic knife did a pretty good job but there were areas of dried buildup that I sanded just to the point of burning through the stain... but these very small imperfections telegraphed through the clear finish.... and almost -- but not quite -- disappeared after 3 coats of final finish. Is there a way to re-imulsify the not quite dried filler with a rag and smooth this kind of thing without pulling the filler out of the pores?
All in all, a very good success and I would use this product again.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
The best way to apply this product is to either brush or rub the Grain Filler onto the surface. Then, while it is still wet, squeegee or scrape it off leaving the filler only in the pores. You can reuse the scraped off product on the next portion of your surface. It does help to apply in sections rather than all at once if your surface area is medium to large. Once the filler dries, averagely 1-2 hours, you can reapply those steps. It averagely takes up to 3-4 applications of this process to completely fill the open grains. Once fully dried, and allowed some time to harden up, you can sand back smooth. It will powder up nicely and sand back well. It seems like in your experience, either there are places not sanded back completely ,or it can be trapped moisture, perhaps not long enough dry time, that will evaporate out with time. We are happy to help answer any further questions or troubleshoot by emailing us at help@crystalac.com. Thank you for your review.

Good Stuff!

I restore antique radios. This is great for filling in the grain on walnut veneer. I spread a skim coat with a straight edge razor. Then I sand it down to the wood. then I shoot the surface with a vinyl sealer. I apply stain and finish with a clear coat on lacquer. Looks smooth and glossy when done. Good product!

Learned of this product while doing overflow finishing work for a local Unpainted Furniture store. We Used this on dozens of table tops. I've used it on executive grade office furnishings and desk tops for close to 15 years as a high-end cabinet maker. Recently finished a hobby item of my own. Used the full line of Luthier's finishes to build a custom pedalboard. Curly maple with multiple layers of dye, It's KNot Shellac as a sealer, as well as a toned mix for shading/blending/final darkening of edges, and this grain filler. Gloss Brite Tone instrument lacquer. Used menzerna polishing system for an excellent first try at a shaded, burst - style finish. Pretty easy to get an instrument grade, high gloss finish.
Good stuff, at all the stages of topcoating.
